The brief
The trust came to me with a domain, a half finished WordPress site, and a list of five pages they needed. They wanted somewhere to show their heritage projects, a way to take donations in pounds, a fundraising thermometer, and a blog. Most importantly they wanted to be able to run it themselves once it was finished.
Because the Clan Logan Charitable Trust is a registered SCIO, number SC054035, the charity name and registration number had to appear on every page. That went into the header and footer design from the start.
A donation system built from scratch
Rather than installing a donation plugin that loads scripts on every page and charges a yearly fee for recurring giving, I wrote the donation system directly into a custom WordPress plugin.
Donors choose an amount and a project, then check out on Stripe’s own hosted page so the site never handles card details. A Stripe webhook reports the completed payment back to WordPress, which logs it, attributes it to the right project, emails the trustees, and thanks the donor automatically.
Everything the trustees can manage themselves
- Projects. Add a project, set a goal, mark it Active, Paused, or Funded. It appears on the hub and the home page automatically.
- Trustees. Each trustee has a card on the About page and a full bio page. Adding one is as simple as writing a post.
- Donations. A dashboard listing every donation, the amount, the project, and the donor.
- Memberships. Applications arrive online and sit pending until a trustee approves or rejects them.
- Blog. Standard WordPress posts, published straight from the admin.
The handover included four short training videos so the trustees have something to refer back to months from now.
Built with
WordPress and Bricks Builder, a custom must use plugin for the Projects and Trustees post types, the donation thermometer shortcode, and the Stripe Checkout and webhook integration. Paid Memberships Pro for the membership system. Cloudflare for DNS and CDN, Brevo for transactional email, and Rank Math for SEO and charity organisation schema.
I also designed the trust’s brand identity and produced their branding guide. You can see that work in the branding portfolio piece, and the full behind the scenes write up is on the blog.
